East African Playgrounds provides safe and exciting play for refugee children in East Africa. Our volunteer projects offer unique opportunities for people to connect with communities, enhancing their CVs and their roles as global citizens.

All children everywhere deserve to play. Play helps all children learn and develop and can help refugee children heal from trauma.

With play comes possibility – It breaks down barriers and creates a hopeful future for communities who have limited access to the amazing power of play. We have been unlocking potential of over half a million children through play for just over 10 years and has built over 350 playgrounds to date.

The organisation is committed to working with local people to design and deliver the best possible play experiences and works sustainably to ensure a positive environmental impact.

The volunteer opportunities East African Playgrounds offer include playground building experiences, cultural trips, conservation treks, sporting challenges – all of which create life-changing experiences for all who join East African Playgrounds and all those at the heart of the work the organisation does.

Lucy had always wanted to volunteer in Africa and leave something tangible behind.

“Every morning on project in Uganda, my team and I worked on building the playground, then in the afternoons took part in creative play sessions with the children at the school.

“Creative play was a great way to engage with the children within the classrooms, working as a team on creative games and arts and crafts activities. On my weekend off I was fortunate enough to go on safari to see the Big 5, which was a once in a lifetime experience and something I have always wanted to do.”

Lucy enjoyed the experience so much, she went back again the following year, and hopes to work for a charity like East African Playgrounds in the future.
