We were so excited to host such an amazing variety of speaker sessions and workshops.

The Power of Sport

Sport is a huge part of the voluntary sector and society as a whole. This section explored the impact of volunteering on grass roots and elite sport, as well as discussing how sport can drive community change and bring people together.

Hannah Mills

Olympic sailing champion and environmental advocate

The world's most successful female Olympic sailor ever, Hannah is passionate about the environment and uses her sport to raise awareness and change behaviour. She founded The Big Plastic Pledge.

Sam Barlow

Founder of Fitmums & Friends and BBC Sports Personality Unsung Hero 2021

Founded Fitmums & Friends in 2009 to bring parents together to get active in a supportive setting. After the loss of her husband, she has run activity settings for those who have lost a loved one.

Phil Smith

Executive Director, Partnerships at Sport England

Phil's wide-ranging role includes helping to fulfil the needs of the country's 7 million sporting volunteers, 1.2 million coaches and 400,000 professional staff, with an emphasis on tackling inequalities.

Steve Brown

Broadcaster and Paralympian

After breaking his neck and becoming paralysed, Steve went on to captain Team GB's wheelchair rugby team at the London 2012 Paralympics. He's now a broadcaster, coach and mentor.

Launch of Vision for Volunteering

Vision for Volunteering was a new 10-year cross-sector strategy to outline the future of volunteering. Led by five partner organisations, the vision outlined what is needed to ensure volunteering can continue to make a big impact for the next decade and beyond.

Ruth Leonard

Chair of Association of Volunteer Managers (AVM)

Ruth Leonard is Chair of the Association of Volunteer Managers, one of the five partner organisations, launching Vision for Volunteering. Ruth's day job is as Head of Volunteering Development at Macmillan Cancer Support.

Resilience - Achieving greatness through tragedy

Ben Cohen

Founder of The StandUp Foundation and Rugby World Cup winner

After a hugely successful rugby career, Ben founded The StandUp Foundation in 2012. It is the world's first foundation dedicated to raising awareness of the long-term, damaging effects of bullying.

Chizzy Akudolu

Actor, writer and mental health advocate

Best known for her role in Holby City, actress and writer Chizzy Akudolu was diagnosed with depression in 2014. After successfully learning to live with and overcome her mental health issues, since then, Chizzy has been a vocal advocate.

Rotary Young Citizen Awards

Hosted by Ellie Crisell

These annual awards recognise young people under the age of 25 who have given an outstanding contribution to their community through volunteering. Attendees got to meet 2022's winners and hear their inspiring stories of citizenship and goodwill.

Jennifer Jones

Rotary International President 2022/23

At the time of Volunteer Expo Live 2022, Jennifer Jones was about to become Rotary International's global President. Rotary is one of the world's leading humanitarian service organisations, leading the way on society's biggest issues including promoting peace, supporting education and protecting the environment

Nicki Scott

Rotary International Vice President 2022/23

Nicki is currently Director of Rotary International, and took the role of Vice President alongside Jennifer Jones in July of 2022.

Ending homelessness with Crisis UK

Homelessness is devastating, dangerous and isolating. Sadly, it is has also been rising year-on-year since 2018. We were lucky enough to be joined by Crisis, the UK's national charity for homelessness to find out how we can end homelessness together.

Ayo Akinwolere

Broadcaster and Crisis UK Ambassador

After supporting Crisis for many years, Ayo became he became a UK Ambassador in 2021. He's seen homelessness for himself across the world as a broadcaster, and in his native Birmingham.

Matt Green

Director, Crisis UK's Birmingham Skylight project

Matt has been working for Crisis since 2010 as Director of Crisis Skylight Birmingham, which supports people experiencing are at risk of homelessness.
