City Year UK offer 18 to 25-year-olds, from all backgrounds, the opportunity to tackle educational inequality by volunteering full-time for a year in schools in some of our most disadvantaged communities across London, the West Midlands and Greater Manchester.

Our volunteer mentors become part of a team; running extra-curricular clubs, and offering coaching and learning support, but also challenging, motivating and inspiring children to be the best they can be.

Our volunteer mentors become part of a team; running extra-curricular clubs, and offering coaching and learning support, but also challenging, motivating and inspiring children to be the best they can be.

And the benefits are not all one way. Our volunteer mentors tell us that their City Year experience – both in school and through the comprehensive training, coaching and career development opportunities they receive – is also life changing.

City Year offers you the chance to learn just how much you can accomplish and gives you an idea of the skills you have, making it easier to choose your future career path.

George Jones, 22, is currently doing his university placement with City Year UK in the West Midlands. He says: “After attending the City Year assessment centre, my mind was made up, so when I got a call offering me a role, I accepted there and then.

“I can honestly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far – much more than I had originally expected. All the clichés of ‘finding out more about yourself’ and ‘discovering what you are capable of’, really are true.

“You are always made to feel part of a team and are encouraged to go outside your comfort zone; which whilst daunting is also exhilarating. Yes, the early mornings may be a struggle, but the sense of achievement you get from supporting pupils, seeing their academic and social progress throughout the year, makes it all worthwhile.
