Carers UK
Exhibitor Spotlight: Carers UK

In the next instalment of our Exhibitor Spotlight series, we showcase Carers UK. Across the UK today 6.5 million people are carers, supporting a loved one who is older, disabled or seriously ill. Carers UK are here to help make life better and easier for their loved ones.

At Carers UK, volunteers are at the heart of our organisation, giving their time to help carers in their local community, in the workplace and online. When you start caring, it can be difficult to know where to turn for help. Our network of 500+ volunteers raise awareness of caring and connect over 20,000 carers every year with the vital information and support they need.

Our volunteers come from all backgrounds and all parts of the UK. Some are looking after a family member of friend themselves, some are former carers and some want to support the cause. But what unites our volunteers is their passion for making a difference to the lives of other carers.

“I became a volunteer to make sure carers get the support they desperately need,” says Jacqui, a Local Awareness Volunteer. Since becoming a volunteer in 2014, Jacqui has been a leading ambassador for carers in her home county of Rutland.

She has hosted information stands at numerous clinics, GP surgeries and supermarkets, given radio talks and shared her experience at events. “As well as the support I receive,” she said, “the best thing about volunteering with Carers UK is being able to support others.”

Carers can be stretched for time, caring round the clock or juggling work and care.

That’s why we offer flexibility in our volunteer roles to suit everyone, enabling carers and other people with busy lives to get involved and meet other carers. In our 2018 Volunteer Survey, 89% of volunteers reported that volunteering with Carers UK had improved their overall wellbeing.

Carers UK’s Head of Volunteering Michael Shann said, “Our volunteers are some of the most inspirational people I’ve met in my life.

“Many of them are current and former carers and so understand the particular challenges that carers face and the value of receiving the right support at the right time.

“By volunteering in their communities, workplaces, online and on the telephone, they do so much to connect carers with this much needed support.”

Our two flagship campaigns are fantastic opportunities for volunteers to join us and help support carers. Carers Week (8-14 June) and Carers Rights Day (26 November) both celebrate and raise awareness of caring and carers rights, and thousands of individuals and organisations across the UK bring the campaigns to life by organising activities and events in their communities.
